shift and throttle linkage question

Merc 50hp four cyl four str
can anyone give me a novice way to change the shift and throttle linkage
the task is not my problem but the terminology
the powerhead is a piece of cake its just the gears with no transmission is my problem in understanding if i need a manual just let me know i am not a novice in any way to motors just to outboards
