Shift cable adjust 3.0 1983

With the shift interupt problems I thought I was having I adjusted the shift cables per instructions on this forum. I had to make a 1/4" adjustment to the brass barrel to complete the adjustments. Doubled check twice to be sure they were correct, now it is difficult to get into reverse, a lot of clicking and a great deal of travel before locking in. Cable was free, able to move easily by hand but somethink is amiss as it shifted easier before. Open to suggestions, shift cable appears to be in great condition. Recomendations?
1983 3.0 alpha one, rebuilt three years ago, sat for one year before use.

Thanks, but those are the instructions I used, double checked everything and now reverse is difficult, must move throttle arm a great didtance to engage. Was better when out of adjustment.

AHHHH yes, thanks Don this one is a slightly different adjustment proceedure and sounds like the problem I may have, Thanks for the good info.
