shift cable adjustment (confused)

HI I just installed a new shift cable on a 1990 mercruiser 4.3 alpha one. Now the problem is im confused. I do everything the manual says(clymers) and forward is fine and when it goes to reverse it actually engages before the handle reaches full reverse. Also the cutout switch is up high out of centering point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using that manual, it's surprising it worked at all. They probably left an important step out like they usually do.<br />Here is a link to the Mercruiser manual.<br /> Merc manual #6 <br /><br />Run your cursor over the page to find the links. You need to look at section 2 for the cable adjustment.
