I have mariner magnum ii 150 that I think my shift cables are out of adjustment. If I dont slam down forward I get a thud noise at transom. I thought maybe dog clutch but read maybe shift cable check first. Any tips on getting right adjustment

Set the control to neutral. At motor end remove shift cable barrel nut. (you may need to remove throttle cable first).

Wiggle shift lever on motor to make sure it is centered in neutral detent. Now adjust barrel nut to fit into holder.

I noticed when was in neutral it had some play at the motor. Is that normal or does it need to be tight

I would expect both throttle and shift cable barrel nuts to be held without play, by the clamp on the motor. There is a plastic insert inside the clamp to hold them tightly. Do you have that?

The clamp for the barrel nut is to the left of the picture you provided. 1/4 inch play is a lot. You should see what can be done to reduce it.

Is this what your talking about? So I take the nut in first picture off and turn this bar with threads to tighten?

The picture in post 9 is the clamp for the cable barrel nuts.

Open the clamp, pull out the barrel nuts and with the control in neutral, center the shift cable in the neutral detent. Now adjust the shift cable barrel nut to fit back into the clamp.
