I must admit...changing the bellows and my R drive was way easier then i thought it would be with what everyone has said. i think in total it took me around 6 hours ( and that's without the exhaust bellows expander tool etc). then only problem i had was with the crimp on the shift cable. damn thing slipped right off as i was clamping it down and now its garbage.
Do i need to use a crimp, or would a small hose clamp be applicable?

On the cable end? I've been told by more than one "service tech" that a wire tie does the trick. And they are a lot easier to install,........so I’ve heard

Head to your local Merc dealer and tell them you want some cable ties PN 54-816311T.
They have special ends on them for using on hose so there is equal pressure all around.

Just use two wire ties linked through each other, equalizes the circumferential pressure the same as the OEM clip. Use two pair of needle nose pliers, grab each tie where it exits the ratchet clip portion, and twist them in opposite directions to prevent torqueing of the boot. If it doesn't catch the first time, have a beer, and try again with new ties.

On the small end of the shift bellows,a cable tie is acceptable.I don't have a picture,But the square end of the tie (where you insert the small end) is curved rather than flat (like a lot of cheap ties). This ensures a good clamping action on a round surface.Great on fuel hoses also.

I had a few on hand and put one around a white cap. You can see how there is pressure all around. They are used a LOT by Mercury for fuel lines on the outboards (Not high pressure EFI). That's what makes them nice on the bellows clamp. That and that clamp is steel (Not Stainless steel) and goes away quickly in salt water.
You can just see the nubs on the tie not around the cap.

Wow, great pic Don. I know you hear it a lot, but thanks for all your help on the board. This wasn't for me, but since I used the clamp on mine it's nice to hear the other options and to see you take the time to post a pic.

That same ty-strap with the radius on the head is carried by Johnson-Evinrude dealers as part number 320107 and is also used for fuel lines, etc.
