Shift cable boot lasted 1 year?

I replaced the lower shift cable and boot on my Mercruiser 165 l6/One drive last year and now it's leaking again :(. Boot has completely separated at the first section and has 1/2 around broken on the 2nd. I used parts ordered in by my local shop, a reputable shop in the business for the last 25 years or so. Any ideas why this would appear to be dry rotting after only a year? This boot was very difficult to get threaded onto the cable, seemed overly tight. Should they have some give? I'm thinking either the Sierra units don't aren't up to the quality of the OEM or I received "new old" stock. Is there anything I may have done to make this fail so soon? Ideas on how to make sure the replacements last longer than a year?

Thanks,

If you installed it so that it has to overstretch when trimming up to trailer it could be a problem.
They are a very tight fit, especially over the brass cable end. Applying some dish soap/water solution helps.

Ayuh,... Personally, I look up the part #s on the web, then order it thru the Marina across the creek from My place...
He charges the same List as the online sources,+ it keeps John in business......;)
