I think it should work in both directions. It only works with the boat in the water because it is triggered by back pressure against the prop; so you won't see it work with muffs on.

They do not work in both directions, or at least there is no reason for it to work other than a stiff shift system (Cable or linkage).
The reason for the shift interrupt switch is to kill the engine for a split second to relieve the pressure on the shift dogs in the gear housing so they will come out of gear and back into neutral without excessive force.
The shift dogs are reverse cut so they will stay in gear when there is pressure on them. That is why it won't come into play when on muffs. No pressure on the props from being in gear.

when you are in forward OR reverse the Dog that drives the gears is ramped ,which locks it into gear

When you shift it will not come out of gear so the arm starts to move and when the switch is pressed, it shuts off the motor alowing it to come OUT of gear

When everything is correct it happens so FAST(less than a 1/2 second) that most people dont even realize its working

tommays

I would think the interrupt would need to relieve pressure if you go from FWD to neutral or from Reverse to neutral; both directions. But it wouldn't need to activate from neutral to FWD or from neutral to reverse, right?

NO

It only helps it come OUT of gear

It does nothing when you put it into gear

tommays
