I bought a transom service kit that included a new shift cable. I went to install the slide on the cable but the end is hexagonal and won't run through the slide (hole is round, so too small). What am I missing here?

Any feedback,ideas would be great.

Thanks

You pull the inner core out of the cable sheath, slide the slide on and push the inner back into the sheath. But that should be done only after the cable is installed in the boat....

achris. Thanks for the response. I may not have the right terms but I thought that I had the inner core. I have a picture, this is the hexagonal end that I was talking about. From looking at the manual this should run through the slide but the smaller round hole on the outdrive end is not big enough for it to through. Thanks again for your help.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/PBullet/01/pb01_05.pdf If it dosent work the parts bulletin number is No. 2001-5
Inspect your inventory of the following shift cable assemblies P/N 19543A 8 and P/N 19543T 1.
If the cable core wire has a round shaped anchor, your inventory is good and it does not need
to be replaced. If the shift cable core wire has a hexagonal shaped anchor, it must be
returned to Mercury Marine for credit.
P/N 19543A 8 will be superceded to P/N 19543A10 and P/N19543T 1 will be superceded
to P/N 19543T 2. The new superceded P/N 19543A10 and P/N 19543T 2 include the new
style shift cable core wire with the hexagonal anchor and the new modified shift slide P/N
850752 2 designed to accommodate the larger hexagonal anchor.
The shift slide P/N 850752 1 can be used up with the older shift cables that have a round
core wire anchor. The P/N 850752 1 will be superceded to P/N 850752 2. The initial
modified shift slides P/N 850752 2 will be identified by a yellow paint dot on the starboard
side of the shift slide. The later shift slides will be identified by a ?2? cast in the top of the shift
slide.

Man I actually saw a version of that but it didn't refer to the fact that there were new style slides. That is good news because I wasn't feeling taking it all apart again.

Thanks for the link Bt Doctor

Re: Shift cable end Aplha one drive

Follow up on my original question. I took a look at the slide, it has a 2 stamped on the top, which, as indicated in the service bulletin is the newer version of the slide, the one that corresponds to the hexagonal cable end. It still doesn't fit though.
So this being my first run at a shift cable let me ask, should it require some force to make the cable end fir through the skinny part of the slide? I don't want to force it and have the cable become damaged.
thanks again

Hate to bump but...
Can anyone that has replaced a shift cable let me know if the end anchor needed some force to push through the shift slide that attaches to the end of the cable on the drive side. As mentioned earlier, the cable anchor does not seem to fit on the parts I have but I am afraid to push with force as I done want to damage either part.

Any help is appreciated.

Wow. I feel like a jackass now. Think I am going to hang up my wrenches on that one. Never even considered pulling that core all the way out. Just wow. Don, thanks for pointing out my lack of common sense. achris and Bt Doctor and the rest of the forum, I apologize for making the entire community look bad.

In the meantime, the slide has been installed. Thanks again.
