I have a 1976 70 hP Johnson looper that I cannot figure out how to get the shift cable installed on.I have put the transmission in forward as per the manual and bought new cable guides. The issue is that the casing guide contacts the bent out portion of the shiftlever that connects to the rod to the lower unit.
I thought at first it was because I had old casing guides that were too thick due to bing from the early sixties. So I bought the correct ones for this engine. I also replaced the set screws with allen set screws. all of this helped as I can now hook it up without the cable installed in the casing guide..
The manual states "Place remote control lever in neutral position. Place shift lever on engine in forward position by swinging bottom of lever toward front of engine. attach shiftcable casing guide to shift lever pin using washer and locknut supplied. (flat on casing guide must face lever)."
I have done that but the casing guide doesnot have enough room to get past the bent out part of the shift lever and slide onto the pin.

Thanks for the reply.
I used the 1976 Johnson outboard factory manual.
I found the problem though.
I went out to take the pictures and decided to turn the prop a couple of times like the manual says. I had not done that because The shifter was going forward and back fine with authoritative clicks. After I turned it, with my hand pushing on the shift lever it suddenly moved forward another 3/4" and popped right on. I feel like an idiot but posting this may help someone else.
I had been fighting this off and on for over a month. Now I am fighting a new steering cable. It looks like I have to remove the motor again to install it through the pivot tube. A re-power is not as easy as it seemed.

Well you've got a good manual but always be sure to read it thoroughly. Thanks for the feed back.
