I am just reconnecting my shift cables on my 1978 Mercruiser 140 and for some reason it is always just a ch out in either forwrd or reverse. If I set it up to shift into forward I am out just a little for reverse, then if I follow the manuals instructions then I adjust the reverse and I am out for forward.

I have read and re-read the manual and can't figure it out any help please!!!

Re: Shift cable issues

First, disconnect the lower shift cable at the shift bracket and, with the assistance of a helper to do the CW/CCW thing with the prop, ENSURE that the cable and lower unit shift smoothly and freely........then use this
to adjust the cable...works for me !!!

Re: Shift cable issues

Thanks, I'll give it a read and try it out.

The shift cable shifts freely and the drive shifts just as nice. I am just connecting them for the first tim on the new transom bracket (horizontal type shifter mount).

Cheers

Re: Shift cable issues

Just a follow up, I re-tested the shift cable and found it to be very sticky.......I guess thats why you need to check it with the drive on :p

Anyways I found a washer that shouldn't have been there on the shift shaft on the lower leg which was creating too much tension on the cable as you tried to shift. remove the washer and reassemble and all works well!

That sheet you posted works wonders for adjusting the cables....thanks
