Shift cable problem

I just replaced my shift and throttle cables.

On the engine side, the shift cable keeps popping off the connector pin when I shift into forward. It no surprise really because it wants to pop off when I set in initially while the engine is in nuetral. What's the deal? How do I fix this.

Re: Shift cable problem

Mine have a retainer, but I do know that trapped torque in the cable is sometimes a problem. Post some pics if you can.

Re: Shift cable problem

I'll post some pics tonight. But it's just as u described.

Both cables go through the retainer and the cable barrels are inserted into them. And then a clamp like device screws/fastens the barrels into the retainer. But this only helps the cable from moving laterally, not up and down.

I can't get it to work.
