i posted here about a month ago asking what was wrong with my shifter. problem was it would bind going into reverse and stall the engine. so i ordered a lower shift cable and tool to remove it. i removed the outdrive today and found 2 things. some water in the bellows. and when i move the shifter the cable seems to move in and out ok alittle tight but does move. so i grabbed the out drive i can shift it by hand really easy. also checked the "foot" that is on the gimble. that turns easy. could this still be a cable problem? and.... it looks like the outdrive isnt sealing great with the paper gasket, and letting alittle water by. soooooo can i seal it with alittle rtv when i put it back on instead of the paper?? while im in there i am going to have to replace the gimble bearing to. its alittle noisey. and by alittle i mean alot...

Absolutely do NOT put sealer on the gasket. That is not why you have water in your bellows. Chances are good there is a hole in the bellows. Or maybe the big rubber gasket got dislodged when the outdrive was installed. But the gasket does NOT need sealer.

By the way - what outdrive are you working on? Mercruiser? OMC? What?

Re: shift cable question, and 1 more

well i know this is an old post!! but i actually just ended up putting it all away for the winter. just got it together yesterday. new bearing, bellows, and cable. one last question. got it out in the ocean yesterday, drove awsome, topped at 42 mph by the gps in 2 foot seas. fun ride. any way, the reverse works, sometimes. if i really ease it in its good but if i drive for a while then slow down, then try to hit neutral its tough to find, cable doesnt bind but just cant find it. then when i do... try for reverse, stall, restart, i can ease into fwd or rev. i think i remember reading a in water adj. i searched, couldnt seem to find it, can anybody refresh my memory? THANKS ALOT FOR ALL YOUR HELP, you guys really are the best.
