So I'm looking at my manual, and am about half sure I got this going right. Since I started my boat tear down in the fall I completely forgot how it went.

(not to mention this entire process has been my first time)

Now my end guide is not even attached, it's just set on there. I have the anchor but dont know where my set screws went so i'm waiting on those. The pic is just to make sure I'm heading down the right road when I attach it.

Obviously the cotter pin isn't right in this one, it was just a bent one I had handy

Any guidance is amazing. Im a shift cable install and a exhaust bellows away from hitting the water. Thanks!

Well currently the paper one that came with the boat from 91'

"Mercruiser Installation Manual Alpha One 4.3. 4.3LX."

If it helps I also have the #7 and #14 manuals downloaded from here to use

Re: Shift cable questions

Are you following the steps on pages 2A-13 thru 18?

Don thanks for jogging my memory, this is where my issue arose originally. My brass barrel has indents, but no hole to actually put it on the stud like here

Re: Shift cable questions

Sounds like you have the wrong shift cable. You need the cable from the helm in that position, not the cable from the drive.
Look at the cable with the "almost a cotter pin" bet it has a hole in it.

Ok, where does that cable run to? the drive or the helm. Don't guess, check it out. Shoot, you don't even have to trace it out, I KNOW it's the cable going to the drive.

Yes that is the one going to the drive. The other one, at very top of my picture in my first post, doesn't appear to have any real barrel but all I see is plastic.

One of these fellas?

Thanks for bearing with me. My boat immaturity is pretty evident.

That is because it is NOT a Mercruiser cable. It's a standard Morse/Teleflex 33C cable with an adapter on it. It gets adjusted by adjusting the cable end, not the barrel nut. You have to be careful not to run out of thread or only having a few on the end when you tighten the jam nut, or it will strip the threads out of the cable end. You need at least a half dozen threads to be safe.

Here is a picture I found of what you have and the type cable you have on the upper.
