Shift cable replacement on Alpha

I just got finished with replacing the shift cable on my Alpha leg. What a major pain in the a..!!<br /><br />The directions are so vague as well.<br /><br />My question is where is the white, spiral wound wrapping supposed to go around. It says to place it over the cable, but where?<br /><br />What a pain. Hopefully I'm set for a long time now.

I normally just leave it off. But I believe it is supposed to go toward the bottom.It is sopposed to prevent the cable from getting damage from chafing the transom or exhaust components.
