Shift cable replacement?

I have a mercruiser 350 with a SE106 outdrive, 2 seasons old.
I replaced the Shift cable to the control box, the throttle cable and the throttle control box 2 seasons ago as well (before we replaced the outdrive).
Neither me or my mechanic can remember if we replaced the lower shift cable at this time...We are almost certain we did because it made sense to replace that before the throttle control box.
Either way I am stalling when going into reverse.
When i remove the cable from the linkage and try to shift by hand the cable slides smoothly up until it tries to go into reverse near the end of its travel. At this point its very hard to get into gear.
the tension in the cable then trips the shift interrupter.

My question is that am i correct in thinking that this is most likely a bad cable and if so what model number cable should i pick up...does the SE106 factor in anything special when purchasing a replacement cable kit?

If the cable seems to new for replacement is it possible that something is preventing the cable from going into gear?

thanks for the help in advance.

Yup, sounds like a bad lower shift cable. When you buy the new shift cable, get a genuine Mecruiser shift cable, not an aftermarket, it's worth the extra $$$. I picked up a complete kit off Ebay for $75,,, money well spent.

should be part number 865436A03

I'd replace the shift shaft busings too, especially if you still have the old style.

Unless you have someone turn the prop you may not get the cable to go all the way in to reverse. I would try that first to line up the dogs before assuming its the cable. It could also be crud in the shift slide cavity.

I als tried having someone turn the prop to line everything up...turns out it was the cable...I replaced it and it moved like butter...im back in the water shifting like a champ!
