I have an Alpha 1 outdrive. Problem, I have reverse and neutral but no forward. I have the outdrive off and my shift cable slide does not look like the one in the manual. It does not have the bearing on top. I have all gears when I have the drive pulled just a small bit away from the boat and the lower unit works great. Could the wrong shift slide be keeping the drive from going into forward and causing the slide to hit the bell housing and jamming?

Ayuh,... Sounds reasonable...

It seems to make sense that the slide needs some kind of guide to keep it straight and slide it back through the bell housing so it does not crook over and jam the front lip that holds the shift arm into the bell housing. All shift slides I see have this bearing on top but mine doesn't.

I cannot visualize what you are talking about.

Are you talking about this shift slide? I've never seen one with a bearing:

Well it is not a bearing. It is just the round part that sits on top of the slide. I call it a bearing because that is what it looks like and acts like.

Okay - you're talking about the shift arm. (I think. Like the one pictured below?) If the "bearing" or bushing is missing, then yes, you will not be able to shift and will need to replace that part.

No the shifter arm is there and intact. The shift slide does not have the small nipple/bearing at the top of it where it goes into the bell housing. It is at the opposite end where the shift arm connects to the slide.

Re: Shift Cable Slide

Can someone tell me what keeps the slide upright and straight as it goes into the bell housing? It seems to have too much play and turns sideways and loses the shifter arm. That is why I think I have the wrong shift slide. Or is there a screw to keep it in place and mine is missing?

Re: Shift Cable Slide

the slide stays upright because the hole in the bell housing is a square. when assembling it and sliding the drive onto the bell housing, ya have to be sure to keep the slide properly oriented as it is capable of turning 360* on the cable. nothing keeps it oriented until it has slid into the bell housing. there is a tool that helps keep it straight up during assembly. i've not gotten one as i've just gone slow and made sure it was upright and still engaged with the shift lever as i've slid the two together..

edit. tool description on pp80 of this pdf http://www.perfprotech.com/store/App_Themes/PPT/images/tech-specs/drive-install.pdf

Re: Shift Cable Slide

I have no problem keeping the slide upright during assembly. I too have learned to go slow. The problem is once the drive is snug against the boat and I shift into forward the slide does not stay upright and hits the bell housing and will not allow me to shift into forward. So my problem is how do I keep the slide upright during use?

Re: Shift Cable Slide

There should be visable a white plastic tube behind the shift slide, it`s crimped to the shift cable itself and it not removable. without it the shift slide just flops around because the tube is the guide.

Thank you. I knew something was missing. Now I guess I need to order a shift cabke kit in order to get that plastic piece.
