Shift cable travel

Hi Im adressing an end of season issue from last fall. 1986, 170 Mercruser.
shift lever seemed to travel too far to engage or disengage. The cables from shift lever to linkage are in great visable condition. from linkage to points beyond im unsure. they are clean at linkage. shift interupt seems to work. forward to neuteral I have to pull back into reverse area of travel. being careful not to jam it into reverse. (is it usual to have travel in the circled outlined areas)

ok here's the picture, had to get a low def-camera. with the slop is there an adjustment somewhere I should be looking for? Im going to the stickies to check.. thanks

Ayuh,... Replace the Lower shift cable,... It's stretched out,+ now Junk..
