Shift clunk at idle

I have a Yammy C40 that give a big clunk when I shifft into forward or reverse from idle. I don't think I can lower the idle speed because it often stalls when I shift into gear.

I would really like to be able to get this thing to troll down a bit and be able to start it more effectively. Any ideas?

New carb kit, timing is correct, idle seems to be at correct RPM, new plugs.

Thanks guys and gurls.

Re: Shift clunk at idle

Boat_Boy
Realize that the shifting of gears on all outboards involves ramming a non rotating clutch dog into a rotating gear. The faster this happens
the LESS wear on both parts. Notice I said faster shifting, not faster idle rpm. When this happens it produces a "clunk" which is fine and normal. A thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk, clunk is what you do not what. Pause in neutral when going from forward to reverse or r to f. Idle rpm should be at factory specs, probably 600-800. Any lower rpm will depend on engine tune and your ability to deal with shift/throttle situations.
Backfire ;)
