I have a 1986 40 hp evinrude model #E40ELCD. My problem is that when my control handle is moved forward the motor shifts into reverse, and when pulled back it's in forward. The control is a new Bombardier unit purchased from a dealer and is supposed to be the right one for this motor. I've installed the control in accordance with the instructions, and see no way to change things at the motor end of the cables, although I have no manual for the motor. Prop is right hand and should spin clockwise in forward. Anyone have any idea what I'm missing here?

Re: Shift control

Most (most) controls give you an option within the controller's housing, where on the internal lever(s), or where the cable is allowed to enter the controller, the cable end connects, so as to achieve a push or pull for a particular lever action. If this is not the case on your's you will need to find a different control.

Re: Shift control

Johnson and Evinrude motors shift into foward by moving the engine mounted shift lever forward. If your control does not retract the remote control cable when shifting into forward, the control is either connected backwards, or one for certain Mercury or Yamaha engines. Many controls can be hooked up either way.

What is the part number of the control?

Re: Shift control

Seahorse, my control retracts the cable when the handle is pushed forward as you describe, but my motor is then in reverse. I don't have the control part number handy, but the motor is an E40ELCD. So far I see no way to "reverse" anything with regard to the cables or their mounts.

Re: Shift control

Thanks to those who attempted to help. The problem turned out to be that the gearcase on the motor had been replaced with an incorrect one from a motor with a different control linkage.
