Ok, heres another question. Hooked up all the electrical to my mercruiser 260 rebuild. I could not get spark at all, messed with it for a long time. finally had a friend come over to look at it. we then just pulled out the wiring diagramm and double triple checked it. everything was put back the way it came off. still no spark. For some reason we decided to disconnect the wires to the shift cut off switch. Motor started right up. decided to try and hook up the wires one at a time to see which was the problem. ran fine with each one hooked up sepratley. but as soon as i hook up both wires at same time i get no start. right now it runs with only one of the wires hooked up. any ideas?

Re: Shift cutout switch

the boat is a 1983 Chaperral my engine #is 6325871 . Im not sure if it is activated or not how do I tell that? if i touch the loose wire to the screw while the motor was running and it will kill the engine. Do these switches get stuck?

Re: Shift cutout switch

Is the micro switch roller centered in the notch on the switch plate? If it is NOT centered the cutout switch is closed and grounding out your spark. If the cutout switch roller IS centered in the notch on the switch plate, the switch is probably bad (shorted through).

Re: Shift cutout switch

are you sure you have it wired correctly. where the 2 wires connect, the long screw supplies the ground (black wire)and the short screw (white wire) is isolated. when the switch operates is causes the coil to short to ground momentarily.

Which is why I asked for engine info. Without a wiring diagram and something to go buy, we could all just make guesses for days.
