Shift Detent '59 Johnson 35: OK to add?

While replacing the prop shaft seal on my 1959 Johson 35 hp I discovered the water had rusted some of the parts, so I don't want to use them if I don't have to. I have the gearset from a newer unit (1970? not sure, got from eBay years ago to use the vertical shaft on another project), and the question is: Why not install the newer gears, shaft etc. ? They seem to have larger dogs on the shifter slider, and the ball spring detent. Othewise all the gears are the same etc. Will I find it harder to shift with my similar vintage remote? Will it over stress the shift mechanism up under the cowl? The ball spring detents sure seem like a huge improvement.
Thanks for any comments, and my apologies if this has been covered many times before and I was too lazy to search it out.

No reason why you can't use it. It'll actually make your shift dogs last a bit longer as it is a more positive engagement in forward or reverse...
