Shift interrupt switch is where?

Engine: J225TXESS (1990 225hp)

Trying to set up engines and running diagnostics right now.

There is a "Shift Switch Elimination Test"

So where is the switch? To me it would make sense that it would be in my actual shifter (remote control) no? My understanding is that the Johnson engine kills (momentarily) three cylinders to aid shifting from gear to neutral.

The only wires I can find coming out of my remote control (and verified this by diagram) are the tilt/trim leads (red, green and blue if memory serves) and the netural lock out switches used to disable the starter if the engine is not in neutral.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: Shift interrupt switch is where?

It exists on the engine iteslf. Follow the shift cable at the point where it connects to the engine's shift linkage. Now, follow that mechanical linkage inwards. You'll see the switch with the wires connected to it. Follow the wires back to there connection point if you wish to disconnect the switch for test purposes.

Thus the engine works on cable tension or movement?!?

BRILLIANT. Excellent news. MUCH thanks!!!!

Re: Shift interrupt switch is where?

The action of the shift cable applying pressure to the linkage which includes the shift interrupt switch results in the switch making contact momentarily.

The purpose of the shift switch is to disturb the torque being applied to the propeller when shifting OUT of gear for a very small fraction of a second. The interruption is so small, so quick (knocking out all of the starboard cylinders) that it is not detectable, not noticed in the slightest.

There are various setups, combinations of boat, horsepower, and propeller pitch and design, that without the shift interrupt switch, it would be impossible to shift the engine out of gear unless one shut the engine down. I have personally encountered this scenario more than once.

Re: Shift interrupt switch is where?

I have an I/O mercruizer on my Mach 1 and have the same thing (except they kill the entire engine for that split second)

Here's a question: Just as a theory: My starboard engine runs poorly at high RPM's. I've traced everthing else but have just started working on the port engine (one at a time, the advice I was given, which is working out well)

Anyway, I'm wondering, as I have not set the cables up on that engine, if it's possible that at higher RPM's (and thus different cable tensions) if an improper set up could activate the shift interrupt switch and thus cause the poor engine performance?

Trying to come up with things to check at this point to try and isolate the problem and I'm running out of issues...

Like Joe said "disconnect the switch for test purposes". That will give you your answer.

Re: Shift interrupt switch is where?

Is there any printed or suggested method for adjusting the shift interrupt switch? It almost looks like the only adjustment would be the shift cable. Any suggestions on that?

Greetings everyone, I don’t know For sure but I think this maybe the issue with my boat, here is what is doing— The last few times I been out, my boat started to die when I go from gear into neutral. When the boat is in gear it runs fine but when I put it in neutral is when it completely dies on me. The make and model is; Yamaha 225 hp saltwater. I appreciate any help I can get with this issue. Stay safe.

Try what Joe recommended to Incorrigible. Disconnect the switch for test purposes. This could give you your answer on whether or not the switch is bad.

Also note: There is a separate category on this forum for Yamaha motors. You are in the Johnson/Evinrude section.

Thank you very much for the information...I am new to this forum and didn’t know where to start, I will take your advice and shift to the Yamaha side, thank you.
