Shift interrupt switch not lining up right

Since I bought the boat last year I've had a lot of difficulty getting it out of gear and back to neutral when on the water. I thought it was the shift cable as I began having trouble getting INTO gear this year. However after replacing the shift cable and doing some research I learned it is my interrupt switch. After inspection, the roller isn't even close to being seated where it is supposed to be. The rocker is sitting well above the roller and I'm not sure if it can be adjusted to line up right. I can pull the switch arm back and get it on the bottom part of the rocker (which doesnt help obviously), but not in the center. Any advice on getting this lined up correctly?

Also the switch doesn't appear to work. With the motor running, I've pushed that plunger in a good ways and the motor doesn't stall out or even hesitate. That will be my second priority :)

Here are some pics of what I'm talking about. https://goo.gl/photos/WjwH2GqaCj7FzEzJ7

Thanks!

(Also since I've discovered this was the problem, I have just been manually killing the motor when getting out of gear. Makes for a real fun loading experience :eek: )

Hard to tell from the pic but the spring goes thru the mounting bolt , not above it. Also the top spring should not have that bow in it.

Looks to me like the intermediate shift cable wasn't assembled properly. Get the jam nut back on cable jacket where belongs & try it again.

Go through the lower shift cable adjustment procedure. Follow all the steps, and in the right order.

Thanks everyone. I noticed the jam nut in my photo as well :( Will definitely tighten that up. The cable is adjusted for the 6" from the cable end hole to the adjusting nut.

I didn't change anything on the shift plate, as I said before its been like this since I bought the boat last year. I'll have to take it apart and see if I can get things to line up.

I read that there are new shift plates that do away with this roller/arm type switch. Are these more efficient / less of a pain to deal with than my older style?

Not really, what you have is fine. Its just assembled wrong. If you look at the photos the springs are not bent or bowed like yours;
Remove the bolt and make sure it goes thru the spring.

Yes, 6" in forward. Shifts into fwd and reverse perfectly. Just doesn't shift out.
