Shift interrupt switch,... to much interrupt.

Is there an adjustment to lessen the interrupt without changing cable/barrel adjustment. It seems to be a much longer interrupt interval on the starboard side engine and in some cases actually kill the engine, port side engine does not interrupt nearly as much. As always, any help is appreciated.

And and I should note both idle rpm are equal at aprox 950 (based on my inaccurate dash gauges)

No, no adjustment. Usually the culprit is a bad/sticky lower shift cable. Disconnect the lower cable and pull the barrel back and forth. It should shift with almost no resistance.

You may want to check the overstroke switch before you get crazy.

There is an adjustment....

Bend the switch arm (carefully) so the switch activates when the roller is 1/8" (use a 1/8" drill) from the slot in the lever...
There is even a special tool for bending the arm.

Chris........

EDIT: Here's a pdf extract for the adjustment on both roller arm and plunger switches.

"overstroke switch",..what/where is that ?

Never heard of that one... He may be referring to something else, but as far as the interrupt switch goes, there is nothing but the interrupt switch....(and see above)

On an MPI engine, yes, 2 switches. One is the shift interrupt, the other is the 'in gear' switch...(MPI ECU needs to know if the engine is in neutral or in gear, and adjusts idle speed based on neutral or in gear)

On a carbed engine, only one switch, shift interrupt.

Ok i did the adjustment described above by achris,..but the 1/8th inch was too much and the switch would not interrupt, so went back about a 1/16" and its working again...just a bit concerned that the duration might be a little long like my original problem. There is no real fine adjustment, basically bending the metal tab back and forth and keep trying and hoping. I wish there was a better way to fine tune it. Sierra makes a "shift assist module". Is there an upgrade for this archaic original ?

If the switch is killing your engine, you don't need a new one. You likely need a new lower shift cable. Adjusting the switch will not help.

Ayuh,.... Exactly,.... The lower shift cable is draggin', causin' the issue,....

Im learning this to be true,... while removing the cable Ive begun lubing the cable from the top and allowed time for the lube (ATF) to run down into the casing and this has seemed to help. Thank you for the sound advise.

Thats not an option right now,..although lubing is helping,...i will continue to lube in order to get through the season, then change both lower cables in fall.
