i've changed the water pump in the drive, made sure that the shifter was in foward and lined the tab on the drive straight ahead as it says in the manual. started it and made sure it shifted into reverse and forward. took it to the water and now have a problem of every time i shift it into gear it stalls (dock side). i can watch the interrupter shift up the y plate and it stays there when shifting. so i am pretty sure the lower shift cable is no good.:( at the end of last year it stalled on me when backing it up and then going into forward. so i just want to verify that it seems to be a cable problem, as i read dons s article on how it works and it says it only works to get out of gear and with load on prop.and second question is does any one have a part number for the kit. the outdrive is a alpha one, first generation(studs to mount lower housing on) part number on valve cover tag is oc546173. and if you would know the gear ratio, and can you remove the boots without damaging (due to the sealer the use) or should i get all new ones. any help would be appreciated :) does any one know were i can get a engine alignment tool or the spec's so i can make one

Re: shift interupter question

ok i got the outdrive off. lucky the shaft wasn't seized.:D i reached in and turned the gimble bearing and it feels ok. no sticking and turns smooth. thats the good news. now the bad! i noticed a flapper sitting in the exhaust bellow, i don't think it should be just laying there. question 1 is were does it go and what else do i have to take apart to get to it? question 2 can i change the bellows and the shift cable with out removing the bell housing or the gimble ring. thanks for the info so far it has really helped me.:) sorry it is a 1989 merccruiser 4.3lx thunderbolt ign.

Re: shift interupter question

flappers go at the top of the y-pipe, just remove the ehaust tube between the y=pipe and the elbow, you will see where they go

do not need to remove the bellhousing to change shift cable/bellows

read the instructions in the manual for changing shift cable, they are accurate

Re: shift interupter question

ok got the flaps in, boots on ,shift cable installed, changed o-rings on drive shaft as they were flatten.:D here is the problem when i put out drive on it slid in easy up to about 3/4" from the end.pulled back off and measured the distance to realize the o-rings were holding up. lubed o-rings and tried to put it back on and now it barely goes in past the gimble bearing to the hub and stops.now i know im going to get alot of did you check the alignment answers, which i didn't do because i dont have the tool and it slid apart with no effort, and the first time it slid in all the way up to the oring with no trouble. which when i measured the shaft and the distance to the hub i was in the hub about 1" or more. I am not understanding why the second time it getting stopped just after the shaft goes threw the bearing.can the bearing move that easy or is it the drive shaft is wiggling around and just miss the coupler. thanks with the help so far it has come in handy.:) sorry for the long winded post
