Shift Issue

Alright I have figured out my problem is probably my lowershift cable, but when i removed my Tach which isnt working correctly either!!! the boat runs fine but when i shift from forward to neutral it is stiff and goes into reverse sometimes then back into neutral. When i have the tach connected the motor dies in reverse, and the tach only shows about 1800 - 2000 rpm WOT ??????

I'm having a tough time following what your exact problem(s) is. Are you confused as to why the tach would cause the shift cable to act up? For that I don't have an answer.

I'd guess you have more than two isolated issues and should start by diagnosing one at a time.

Yea these are two seperate issues and i have started to diagnose them just wondering why my tach would only read that high?? bad tach possible?? when i hooked it back up to the coil i could rev the motor in neutrel and it would go up to 4000 but after driving it would only go up too 2000 again

Re: Shift Issue

Howdy,

You probably discovered that the lower shift cable needs replacing. There also may be a problem with the shift interrupt switch actuation or wiring.

Cheers,

Re: Shift Issue

First off, I'm wondering if you've heard that it's potentially very dangerous to rev your motor into the 2k+ range in neutral? Not sure what exact rpm is the cut off (help from the forum?), but you probably should never ever get it to 3k...just what I've read in this forum.

On your tach, are you saying that when you start the boat, rev it in N, the max it will rev to is 4000 when you open the throttle considerably? See above.

When you are in drive, it only gets to 2000? Are both these situations in wide open throttle? Basically, do you believe that the tach is doubling your count in N vs F?

What needs to be figured out is if you're actually only getting 2k rpm in F vs N, or if your tach is faulty. Which is it? Are you getting on plane, making a good speed?

Also many tachs have wirings based on if you have a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine.

My suggestion would be to make sure your tach wiring is correct (there's references in this forum) or get a tiny tach or something similar to double check it.

Re: Shift Issue

You definitely have a lower shift cable problem. Also, a bad tach has also been known to cause ignition problems so replace your tach as well.
