I have a 1971 Evinrude, 18 h.p. and the gear shift linkage bolt has stripped out or will not tighten up preventing the motor from going in gear. I can not tell if there are suppose to be two bolts on the rod or not. I would greatly appreciate any information and help in fixing this problem and adjusting the rod properly. Thank you!

Re: Shift Linkage Adjustment

Hi Paul...
If you are referring to the link that connects the upper shift shaft to the lower shift shaft, there should be two bolts. If the link is striped, you may be able to run a tap through it and put a new bolt in it. There are no adjustments at this end of the motor. Drop the lower unit and check the link. The shift shafts are machined at the ends to line up with the hole in the link. Make sure these are lined up before putting the bolt in. If the link is to far gone, replace it.

OBJim :p
