I am currently removing my lower unit on a 1965 evinrude 9.5 hp. I got all of the lower unit bolts off, and it dropped down about an inch. I am now working on disconnecting the shift linkage. It is the bottom of the two bolts towards the rear of the motor, right? I have tried and tried and I cannot get it to budge... any suggestions? Thanks

two screws going into a brass connector?...have you tried a socket on the lower screw?...there should also be a star washer....either, or both, like to fall into the lower unit housing...a little heat, penetrating oil, etc. may help things along

Thanks guys! I got it free with a little liquid wrench and I was able to finally fit my torque wrench socket in there. It feels good to have success!! Now, the screws on the water pump housing are seized. Any ideas??

No, I do not. I have some pb blaster on it, and I am taking a crack at it every time I walk by it. I got 3/4 of the screws off of the housing.

We just had to use one of these on our 35 and it worked great...I had not seen one before and neighbor brought it over after he saw me struggle, now I want one.

We also ended up using heat on some others after letting PB blaster soak for the night.
Just don't be surprised if you break any bolts off...we broke one to a motor mount that would have cost over $30 had I not had a spare parts motor.

Blaster did the trick... any advice for getting the housing off... maybe pry it? Of course, that is stuck too!

Try prying it first. Maybe try driving a sharp putty knief in it and see what happens.

I haven't got that far on mine yet...I would say heat but on this housing I am not sure if there are plastic components, gaskets...o'rings etc. that you could damage by applying heat. Where mine was stick we made sure to remove any of that.

If it were me I would probably try what boobie said and then possibly try a chisel that is dull and a couple raps of a hammer...sharp chisel could damage the housing and so could hitting it in the wrong place or with the wrong thing.

Also PB should help here too I would think.
Good luck.

Next thing that's seized? The impeller on the shaft... for those of you that are wondering, this thread is not a joke, this is what saltwater does to an outboard I guess. Any suggestions or tricks for getting the impeller off of the drive shaft?

Re: Shift Linkage Bolt Stuck

There is a product out now called Loctite Freeze Release that puts some serious cold on the bolt or stuck fastener....might be an option for some applications....definitely better than broken bolts, etc. The impeller may have to be pried up with a screwdriver or similar...may have to cut it off. Do a lot of cleaning, polishing and greasing during re-assembly, and all this stuff may not be stuck so bad next time. Good Luck!:)
