can anyone advise me what is the easiest way to change the shift cable going into an OMC 3.0litre Cobra sterndrive?

read this site:

and buy a factory OMC manual so you know how to adjust it correctly.

Might also help to buy the correct adjustment tools. The one that holds the bellcrank at 90? is a good one to have.

You pull the outrive and set it aside. No disassembly of the lower unit is done. The manual tells you everything you need to do.

This is what you will see when you pull the drive:

The end of the shift cable is labeled "G".

You want the bellcrank positioning tool or 90? straightedge and a helper for item "A".

If you really want to go cross eyed, read this thread:

Hire a mechanic who knows how to do it.

The easiest way isn't always the best way. Learning how to do it properly by yourself may be the best way; you'll know how to do it and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself. That's what I did.

well, i took the cable off the back of the engine compartment linkage today and could move it freely.
so, now a bit more baffled as to why when connected all up to side mount controller that it is hard to shift....

Thankful for this thread.. (and the others like it) I'm going to start on this project today. Three years ago I paid a shop $480.00 to replace the cable and service the outdrive. (replaced the bellows).. The boat started shifting hard and has got harder, and harder. We launched it last week end and I had to jam it in gear, and no reverse. Put it in forward, then it wouldn't come out.

I took off the lower shift cable (red) and the shifter moves smooth and easy. I tried to pull on the shifter cable with all my might, and it wouldn't budge.

I have a 1989 Seaswirl cuddy with a 4.3 Cobra I/O.

I had the same problem.. here was the reason. The shifter rod on the outdrive was stiff and very hard to move. I used break free oil on on and started moving it up and down until it moved smoothly. It was so stiff it broke the cable. I'm waiting for the new cable to get here, then I'll be in great shape.
