Shift Linkage Repair Advice

I have a 25 hp elect start 1988 Merc outboard. The shift linkage rod/arm inside the engine has come loose from the shift tab (starboard side of engine toward the front). I have made a small copper pin to hold in place but am sure that is not the correct way to do things. The rod has a short right angle projection with a small hole.

Can anyone suggest what should be used and how to determine the part part number.

Thanks,

Dave

Go to your local home improvement or hardware store and buy a hitch pin or a cotter pin. Place a flat washer over the link and insert the hitch pin (sometimes called a hairpin clip) or a cotter pin (preferred).
