I just replaced the lower unit on my 35 HP Merc, S/N 1628147 (1963).
With the controls disconnected, I can shift into forward, neutal and reverse.
When I connect the controls, I can't get enough stroke to hit both forward and reverse. I can adjust so I get one or the other.
Before I let the ice wreck my lower end last winter, it was shifting - but not engaging reverse real good. The drive shaft housing appears to be from a newer model, since it has "1971" cast into the housing.
The boat (1964 Cadillac) has a white MerControl single cable control unit.

Any suggestions?
