Would a problem with the shift linkage cause loud noise in the lower drive?
Drive is going is going into foward, reverse, and neutral. but is making a very loud noise in all three gears. I have checked the upper drive and lower drive and can find nothing wrong that I can see. It seems like the motor is harder to start even though the battery is fine. Could this be because the linkage is not correct? I am just pulling at straws. I don't want to disasemble the lower drive unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: shift linkage

It is a clanging. This started at the lake when we were going about half throttle and everything just died. Would not start for about 30 min. Got going and it did the same thing. Would not start. Got towed in and put the muffs on and heard the noise. It does it all the time when engine is running in
foward, reverse, and neutral. It is coming from lower unit.

Hope this helps

I checked the linkage and it seems fine.
When I put it in forward and spin the prop CW it is easy to turn and makes a small clicking sound. It locks in gear when I spin it CCW.
When I put it in reverse and and try to spin the prop CCW it is very hard to turn and makes a loud clanging sound. It too locks in gear when I spin it CW.
In neutral it is quiet and easy to turn.
Is this normal or could this be my problem?
Thanks
Joe

Re: shift linkage

I have pulled the lower unit three times and checked it. Also pulled the upper unit and checked it. Could not find anything abnormal.
It goes in and out of gear fine. I just have this tremendous noise.
The oil was clean.
