So the other day as i was setting the timing on my boat i noticed the engine got a little warm, my son had evidently kicked the muffs when i wasnt looking so i decided before hitting the water id change the impellar, which didnt need it after i took it out, but its new now. Putting the lower unit back on i must have slipped it out of forward drive a bit, now getting in neutral is touchy and the shift cut out keeps killing my motor. So how to i lock that thing in gear when i restab it, it is a pain in the neck, and ruined my boat day. Btw this is a 77 searay with a 228 merc and an mr1 outdrive. The drive is a sei.

Turn the shift shaft clockwise fully, which is forward. Turn the prop counterclockwise and hold in place with a bungee cord. Make sure the helm is in full forward. Also, don't forget the stainless steel washer under the intermediate shift shaft.

I use a large vice grip clamped to a blade. The weight of it is enough to hold it in gear.
