hello I need some help.I have a 1987 85hp force. I was changing the oil in the lower unit and removed what i thought was the drain plug,It was actually the shift pivot screw.I had a hard time but finally got it back in but now it seems to stay in gear, when in neutral the prop is in gear and no change when shifting.can this be fixed without taking apart the gearcase?any help will be appriciated. thanks, Troy

Re: shift pivot screw

DO NOT run your engine until this is fixed.
It can totally destroy your lower unit.

There are a few threads here that describe a way to fix, it worked for some. But not for others, and cost them $600 in parts, plus labor.

The probem is that things have to be lined up perfectly to get it back together correctly. You can move things around and get the screw in, but no guarrantee that it is right.

Get a manual.
Get a lower unit seal kit,
and a water pump/impeller if you haven't changed it recently.

Tear it down and fix it right, or risk disaster.

When you are done, put a dab of silicone over that screw so no one ever does it again.

Outboardparts.com has the best prices that I've found and they only charge $7 shipping for orders under $60. Over $60 and shipping is free!!

I got my lower unit seal kit for just over $20 but it varies depending on the engine.

Shane
