Are all shift plate mechanisms the same for a 140 mercruiser, or do they differ from boat to boat?

Yes.......
I believe the change occurred in the early 80's......
That is to say they are different, but it has to do with the model year of the drive package, not the boat's manufacturer..........JK

So if I were to take on off a 78 VIP 18 ft and put it on a 77 CVX 16ss then the shifting would be ok.

As Haut has said,....... It's about the Motor,+ Drive,.....

Which or What Boat it comes from is Irrelevant.......

IF both of those boats have a 140hp Mercruiser,....
