I know iv'e seen this question before but cant seem to find it.
Have a 1987 Searay sundancer ,with an Alpha 1 oudrive,5.7L and Quicksilver shifter (Single Lever)
Its seems to shift fine while not running, or while engine or outdrive is cool/warm. once you run the boat awhile the shifter gets hard to shift from forward to reverse.
Almost or does get to the point where you have to shut the engine off to be able to shift gears. and when checked while the engine is not running at this point its shifts with no problems. any suggestions?

Re: Shift Problem while running

whats your idle, in the water, warm motor, in gear?

How do you shift i hope you let the prop stop for say 5 seconds before you shift from neutral to forward, then back into neutral, and then reverse.

The idle is set at or around 650-700 rpms warm meaning 140* yes i allways hesitate during the shift. as the engene runs longer (meaning time) it gets harder to shift. to the point it wont come out of forward without feeling like im going to break something.

Re: Shift Problem while running

Good idle, so lets find out whats sticking. on the motor there is a shift converter, it is what the shift cable connects to and the lower shift cable connects to.

Remove the lower cable, from the converter, does the throttle move free? Yes. then i think your lower cable is in need for a change.

The shift converter itself moving free? remove the other cable and see.

Re: Shift Problem while running

with the engine warm and running in neutral, depress the v-notch on the shift plate assembly to engage the shift interrupt switch

the engine should stop running when depressed, if not the shift interrupt switch is bad or needs adjustment

if the engine does stop running when depressed, its time for a new lower shift cable and proper adjustment

Re: Shift Problem while running

have tested the interupts switch and it is fine.
Have removed the upper cable and it moves freely when shifting.
Had to rebuild the outdrive a few weeks ago and did check the lower cable then, Its not new but not old either. and seemed to be in good working order. but what was when it was not running.
I did find some gauge marks in the shifter lever housing. seems the shifter had been grinding on the metal framework. looks more like it happened when i was trying to force it out of gear. but not sure.
Sorry forgot yes this prob did exsist before the outdrive repairs.
