Re: Shift problem

If nothing has been disturbed, your lower shift cable is sticky from the non-use.

Disconnect it at the shift plate and cycle it end to end. If still no good, try WD40 at the drive end. Still no good, pull the cable out, clean and give a coat of WD40. Do not use grease.

If cable is rusty, change it, cleaning is no good.

Good luck.

Qystan

Re: Shift problem

Let me do some guessing here also.
If you have a Volvo, you could have lines wrapped in your prop.
If an OMC, could be a bad ESA system
If a Mercruiser, it could be a stiff shift cable from the engine to the drive.

Re: Shift problem

Thanks for your advice, I concentrate on the shift cable and that was the problem, spray many times PB into the cable and few beers (many hours) and the problem was resolve.
tomorow fishing.
CD

Re: Shift problem

That's only a temporary fix.
I guess the "Hints" didn't work.
WHAT KIND OF ENGINE AND OUTDRIVE DO YOU HAVE?
I have to assume you have either an OMC or Mercruiser.....at least by saying spraying the cable worked, knocked out Volvo as being an option.

Re: Shift problem

bondo is right. most likely the cable from engine to lower unit. not a big deal to replace. factory drive manual covers in excellent detail. must also make sure that proper adjustments/cuts are made at the shift plate so that cutout switch works properly. good luck

Re: Shift problem

OK I guess you don't want anyone to know what engine you have, not sure why it's always so hard to get information about what someone is having problems with, but.....
Here is a Mercruiser service bulletin on adjusting the shift cable after you replace it with a new one.

Service Bulletin 89-4
