Hi so at wits end and looking for help! I have a 96 j25tkledc it the 3cyl model. Anyways while trolling it died completely I eventually replaced the power pack which got it going immediately but when it quit I noticed it was extremely hot. I figure the heat likely helped to fry the power pack so I investigated removed the thermostat and noticed that it was not pumping water to top of engine at an idle it would when revved up. So replaced water pump and thermostat at the same time got rid of the oil tank and the engine runs and pumps water great in a tank now but.... can't get the shifting right it appears I must of messed it up getting the lower end off. I have reverse in both reverse and neutral position and neutral in forward. I have tried to adjust at the shift linkage but no luck. Does the actual rod thread up and down? Does if thread up and down in the lower end(gear case)? If so how do you do this as the nut at the bottom just spin on the rod. Could I use vise script directly on the rod?
Thanks for any help advice
Brian

Also does anything need to be done with the cord that unplugged from the oil tank?
Thanks

It sounds as though you may have partly unscrewed the lower shift rod (#48) from the yoke (#12). AFAIK it should be screwed in fully.
Whatever you use to grip it make sure you do not damage the part which passes through the O ring #34

( you have not touched the Philips headed screw (#13) next to the lower oil drain screw I hope)

You should find instructions for disconnecting and reconnecting the shift rod in the manual at http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manu...inrude.html#/0

OK thanks I will give that a try. The rod that goes up to the engine is there adjustments there? And I did not touch the Philips screw you mentioned. It's also worth mentioning that I can get it into forward if I really push the selector past its normal travel. My fear is it would just be in gear slightly and I would not want it poping out at full throttle
Thanks again

The upper shift rod may have turned and is out of adjustment.------Post the dimension of it from the end to the exhaust housing in nuetral.
