My boats an 88 trophy hardtop, w/3 liter omc GM. and cobra drive. I read the thread about adjusting the cable. This is my first boat and I'm newer to mechanical problems that don't have to do with cars than the other poster. My shift just won't get in and out of gear w/o having to horse the control. My question is, how much of the explanations were adjustments makeable with the boat in the water and the drive on? Is there anything I can do that way?

thanks

I'm certainly no expert (looking for info myself), but can point you to the following link. Near the bottom is a section labeled "5 Steps of the Engine Shift Bracket Adjustment".

All of that can be done from inside the boat without removing the outdrive. BUT it assumes there are no problems with your outdrive itself, that you have a good transom shift cable, and it is properly adjusted. Try the 5 step adjustment procedure. If it works great; if not I think you're into an entirely different level of diagnosis/ repair.

http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/kw-shift.html

Good luck.
