dodging storms and waiting for parts have put me on a delay. But the tilt and trim is no functional, new water pump, power pack, plugs, starter, starter solenoid.

she runs now. But have yet to splash for other issues.

Anyway, in the lower unit service (impeller, pump, and new oil) I must have improperly set the shift rod height because I get forward with a good BUMP, but get a grinding “meh” shift into reverse. I tried adjusting the shift cable, but made minimal difference.

according to the manual it should be 21 7/32. But before I take it off, can someone confirm? Although this says it’s an evinrude manual, it seems to cover A LOT of different engines.

And for good measure: am I correct that a clockwise turn to lengthen the shaft would make reverse easier to attain, while making forward more difficult? I’m also wondering if I have the shaft detect pointed the wrong way.

anyway, thanks again.

PS - I did the measurement with a measuring tape - which the manual specifically states not to do (didn’t see that) because of how the adjustment can be off.

Ill grab a yard stick and do it correctly for the reset.

A clockwise turn would SHORTEN the shift rod.----And that would make reverse harder to get.----And your manual is totally wrong on the dimension !

Counter clockwise is what I meant. Sorry it had been a long day.

Do you have the correct measurement? The sticky only goes to ‘81

I did find this - the manual I have is an eBay reprint - so I couldn’t discern the 21 1/4 - so I set it as “acceptable range”

Sorry to say I have no idea.

i read that as 60* V4s and “v6s” as in all v6 engines.

Look straight down to the flywheel nut... The angle of the cylinders, if they are.....................

"L" angled = 90 degree

"V" angled = 60 degree

There are numerous charts that can be found using google.----I believe you now have the correct number for your motor.
