Hello,

I swapped a lower unit and found i only had reverse. After taking the lower unit off the boat, i found the shift rod was not threaded all the way down. I believe this would be the direction favorable to forward gear (correct me if i'm wrong).

What direction is the top of the shift rod (part number 47 below) supposed to face? Port or starboard? My understanding is port but i'd like to verify. The drawing doesn't really help.

Also, is it correct to simply screw the shift rod all the way in and back it off just enough (either 1/4 or 3/4 turn) to the right position?

This is a precise adjustment. You'll need the right height adjustment, a perfectly straight yard stick, and a straight edge that makes a perfect right angle off the side of it to get it right. Go to

and read the one on shift rod adjustments.

screwing the shaft all the way in and then backing off 1/4 turn pointing the end of the rod towards the starboard side appears to have made things work.
