Shift rod adjustment Q-1972 25hp Johnson

Just replaced the impeller on my 72 Johnson 25hp. After reinstalling the lower unit, I noticed the shift rod was not engaging correctly. It never shifted “correctly” since I purchased it. It shifts, but neutral doesn’t line up correctly with shift handle/setting. Is the only shift adjustment at the shift rod connector? I saw a video that shows you can turn the rod but I was unable to do so. If the shift rod connector is the only adjustment point, then I will try to tinker with it more.

The shift rod does NOT turn on these.----------There is no adjustment at the brass connecter either.----So are the notches on the shift rods both lined up with holes in the connecter.-----The only adjustment is at the shift lever.

Gotcha. Yes both notches on the shift rods are lined up with holes on the connector. Can you describe how to adjust the shift lever?

There is just 1 screw.----Adjust one way makes it better.---If not go the other way.---Fairly easy in my opinion

Ok, looks like the “screw handle Adjustment” #43 is what I need to turn to adjust . I’ll give it a shot in a few. Thank you for the quick response.

Thanks Racerone! Once again your knowledge came through. Got the adjustment done and shifts perfect. That bolt was tight but a small adjustment was all that was needed .
