shift rod adjustment

how does one adjust shift rod length on 1994 john 40 hp model j40tlere? where do you measure from, and what should the length be ? should the dog leg at the top of the shaft be facing toward or away from you, looking at it from the port side? the shaft got turned as it was being pulled out.

Dog leg should face forward. Put the shift in neutral. Assuming this is a 15 inch shaft motor, measuring from the top of the casing to the center of the securing pin hole the measurement should be 16 15/16 inches. If it is a 20 inch the measurement should be 21 15/16. A// +- 1/32.
