All righty, I replaced the impeller and now I'm ready to reinstall the lower unit, but I can't be sure the shift rod was accidentally rotated in the meantime. Is there a certain way it needs to go - e.g. flat side facing forward, bend facing starbord, etc.?

The length is critical, I don't know the exact length for yours, maybe someone does.

Thanks, the length shouldn't be an issue, the rod hasn't been turned intentionally, but I'm thinking it might have turned accidentally by about a quarter turn as I was maneouvering the lower unit out of the midsection. I'm just concerned about which way the top (flat) portion of the shift rod should be oriented. Any ideas?

Clearly you turned it some and can't remember the correct orientation. The exact length will make sure it's oriented properly.
