Shift rod bolt 1980s V4

I despise this design! Great motor but getting the shift rod linkage connected after a lower unit water pump service is next to impossible! 1982 Johnson 115. Can't hardly see it, hoses in the way, can't touch it. Using a u-joint on 1/4 in drive socket and a little rod to position the shift rod. Still can't get it!!! ARRRGGHH!

Long skinny screwdriver to help with lining up the rod. Put permatex on the bolt heay and put it into the socket that will help hold it. Or a piece of wire with a hook on it.

I too always used a screwdriver but I used it under the hood pan so as to keep that shift rod jammed into the shift clevis.

I also used long nose pliers, either at that same spot or under the bottom M/Mt area to slightly (as needed) turn the shift rod to line it up with the shift clevis's slot.

Removing and installing that (*&&^%$ shoulder bolt...... I use the flexible shafted mechanic's grabbing tool.

The 1/4" socket, long extension, and universal socket... yeah, that's a must!

I use a magnetic pick up tool to slot it in and i always go in to doing it anticipating its going to be a prick of a time which seems to make it a bit less annoying
