I have a 1989 88 hp Evinrude that I want to replace the water pump on. Other
outboards have a bolt that holds the top of the shift shaft on. On this motor, I
see a pin in a fork that holds it together. How do I disconnect the shaft from
the pivot?? Thank you, John

On the starboard side of the motor there is a snap pin that clips to the end of the horizontal shift shaft. Remove that pin and the shift shaft should slide out enough to allow the vertial shift rod to free up from the small pin in the fork.

Adding to Chinewalker's comment, disconnect the shift cable, pull the pin, push the shaft inward and twist.

Be careful not to turn the shift rod while the lower unit is out, will mess up the length adjustment. Upon reassembly, sometimes the shaft will twist slightly, making it hard to line up shifter with the rod hole. I use a length of clothes hanger with a small hook bent in the end to help align the end of the shift rod.
