Shift rod connector or clutch dog?

After fixing weak spark issues and a head gasket replacement, I went for a test run today. Rode like a champ. No vibration, quite, smooth, perfect rpms and speed. And then something else....Accelerating out of idle I heard a clunk, felt it slip out of gear a bit. Then while cruisin about 20mph it disengaged all together and rpms raced. When trying again it would slip in and out, had to drive idle back to the dock. Also tightened the cable and that had no affect. When on trailer I put it in gear and stepped on the prop to spin. Felt like it was solidly engaged, flywheel spun and could feel piston compression. I really don't want to get into the gearcase, but figured this might be the cluch?????

Go for another sea trail and disconnect the shift cable from the motor and shift by hand and see if it still skips. If it does you have worn shiftdog/gear or your shift rod is not set the right length. If it works the put it in neutral, put control lever in neutral and adjust cable to match engine linkage. Reconnect cable and try her again.
