I'm trying to change the impeller on a 73 115hp V4. I'm following a SELOC manual that I've purchased and it says to remove the bolt or bolts to disconnet the shift housing.

I'm trying to figure out these bolt(s) are? It seems difficult to get to. any tips?

Re: Shift rod disconnect

Here is the excerpt from the SELOC manual:

**Remove the bolt or bolts from the shift disconnect coupler under the lower carburetor. ***

When you look under the carborator, there is a swingarm which is controled va the lines from the control box. The shifting rod or whatever it's called connects to this swingarm using a pin. Trick is, the pin is a pain to get to. I see no bolts. Maybe I'm not looking at the right thing. I definitely need some help here.

The shiftrod connection is located at the front of the engine under the carbs. Use a swivel socket and a swivel extension and you won't have too much of a problem.

The cables are in the way, making it difficult to reach the bellcrank screw, which is about midway on the two parallel arms which connect to the shift rod.

At the end of the two arms is a pin which goes through the top swivel of the shift rod.

The bellcrank screw must be removed and the arms spread to release the rod.

With the motor tilted up you will find two bolts on either side of the gearcase, facing up. There also is one in front of the trim tab, and another hidden above the trim tab, which must be removed first in order to reach it.

Including the trim tab bolt, that is a total of 7 bolts to remove from the gearcase - all facing up.

Be sure to mark the location of the trim tab before removing it so that you can put it back the way it was.

Try not to turn the swivel on the shift rod.

Re: Shift rod disconnect

Thanks for the help! I was able to get the shift rod disconnected withough a problem. However, putting back together was a pain in the #$%#. It took me about 30 minutes of tinkering to get it and now it works fine.
