Shift Rod - Evinrude 200XP cant install help!!

Hello all,

I have been attempting to install a replacement lower unit on my 1992 Evinrude 200 XP and I am failing because the shift rod will not make it through the hole in the lower part of the engine cover.

I have been searching for weeks and cannot find a drawing or any verification if this is the correct part or not. The Seloc manual I bought does not help at all and I will not receive my factory manual until next week.

Anyone know if this is the correct type of fitting on top of the shift rod? Anyone have a drawing or picture that represents this for my year and model?

Any help appreciated!!

What's the model number of your motor?? Looks like there are different configurations for the top connection depending on the model!

Thanks for the link. I have looked at that diagram many times before and it appears to be a different shift rod altogether. The one I have has the screw on fitting with the hole in it as displayed on the picture and the one that is shown in the diagram is "bent" at the end. Maybe I have the wrong shift rod.

The engine model number is VE200SLENS.

the lower in the pic shows the shift shaft for the old hydro mechanical case,
that case wont work on your engine. dont care what E-bay says.
even if you got it through nothing would hook up as the intake and linkage were so different between the old crossflow hydro units and the looper V6 case.

rodbolt - are you saying the gearcase will not work at all or just the shift rod? Thanks for posting.

I can see now (in pictures on ebay) the different type of shift rod now. Makes me wonder if I have the correct unit or not.

agree with Rodbolt. it will not work. also, when you shift it to forward, the lower will go into reverse, when you shift to reverse, the lower goes into forward. no this cannot be changed. try to return it to seller, file ebay complaint, that the item was not as represented.

I didn't pay anything for the unit, it came with the boat that I acquired. The previous owner wanted to charge me for it (since he bought it from ebay, but he decided not to.)

I guess I will be looking to sell or trade this unit. Thanks for the replies.
