I have to ask because this shift rod is driving me nuts. In the Secret File it says i should be 20-29/32 for my 1975 Evinrude 50HP Long Shaft.

The Boatinfo Manual says 21-5/16 on page 503/ section 8-189

http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/502

I'm hoping someone has this engine and can verify for me. I can say that 20-29/32 is basically screwed all the way in, maybe a half turn out.

Thank you as always for the help

Man I honestly couldn’t tell you that but when I’m dou put it about middle or a little shorter hook it up and test each gear put it in neutral prop should spin freely by hands put it In forward gear then see if prop spins freely don’t force rotate the prop just see if it’s engaging then back to neutral see if it spins freely the. Test reverse see if it engages and back to neutral. That’s my best advice honestly hope it helps

Thanks Gree. I’m scouring my service manual. But I’m either missing it, or it’s not in here.

I used the measurements from this site (as accurate as I could) and it worked!

a little sloppy from neutral into fwd or rev (need to push a bit past the “click”) I’m not sure if that’s pseudo normal for these years or not.

But it it worked. So compared to what this engine was a week and a half ago, I’m nothing but happy.

1975 - 1978 - 50, 55, 60hp Electric Start = (S) 15-29/32" - - (L) 20-29/32" plus/minus 1/32" Have shift rod in neutral.

Measurement is from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

Thank you - that’s what I did. And it worked (albeit a bit sloppy).

The original post post was because I had conflicting info.
